Smethwick engine at Thinktank, Birmingham

One of the jewels in Thinktank’s collection is the Smethwick Engine, the oldest working steam engine in the world. Designed by the firm of Boulton & Watt and installed almost 240 years ago on the Birmingham-Wolverhampton canal in 1779. For the first time in history, production became independent of water, wind, animal or human power. Join us and see the power of the engine first hand, find out about the fascinating story of its use and impact on the region.

The engine will be in steam at 12 noon and again at 2.30pm.

Cost: Entry to this event is included in the price of Thinktank admission. Booking is not required.

If you are planning to visit in groups of 2 or more adults and are travelling by public transport, there is a 2-4-1 ticket offer for entry to Thinktank.

This event is organised by Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum.
