Mechanical Wonders: The Lap Engine

Meet model maker David Hulse and hear how he researched and built the scale model steam engine on display in the exhibition. The model is of the ‘lap engine’ (1788 by James Watt) and was once at work at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Manufactory in Handsworth. It used to power 43 lapping (polishing) machines.
